Spring 2003

2003 Chapter at Former SFS

June 21st Dedication of the
Fr. Aubert Grieser Memorial Garden

Inside this issue:

he restoration of the Peace Garden at the former St. Francis Seminary has been completed, thanks to the time, talent, and financial contributions of a number of individuals.  Recall that the Franciscan Alumni Association began this project in 2001.

On Saturday, June 21st, the garden will be re-dedicated as the Father Aubert Grieser Memorial Garden, in honor of the priest and gardener who brought a vision to life there many years ago.

Fr. Gil Wohler '53, who is celebrating his 50th high school seminary reunion this year and who recently returned from years of missionary work in Africa, will be the main presider at 5 p.m. Mass in the garden area. Fr. Jack Wintz '54 and perhaps other priests

will also be celebrants for the Mass.

After Mass, we'll fire up the grills for a barbecue dinner and socializing.  Dinner will include dessert and drinks.  A $10 contribution is suggested to help offset the cost of dinner.

You may arrive as early as 2 p.m. to tour the grounds. Many of the trails in the

woods are clear, including the ones that begin at Calvary and the trail to the rock bridge.  A tour of the main building will be available at 3 p.m.

If it rains, Mass will be in the chapel and dinner will be in the multi-purpose room (former study hall).

Charlie Bullington '67 has been doing some detective

work regarding the rock bridge in the woods beyond the Peace Garden, which was built by the classes of '46 and '47.  Fr. Al Hudepohl, former sem student ('47) and current resident, informed Charlie that there's a time capsule embedded in the concrete of the bridge. According to Al, the time capsule has "a copy of the seminary rules, a pack of cigarettes and other items from that era."
